Why Row for
Pittsburgh Rowing Club?
Why should I try rowing? The obvious answer is that rowing is the ultimate sport for all age groups. From college admissions and scholarships, to fully-body exercise, to setting and accomplishing goals, rowing has something to offer athletes of all backgrounds and abilities! We are fortunate in the city of Pittsburgh to have access to three rivers with beautiful views of the city and scenery.
Exercise
Rowing is a smooth, rhythmic motion that works every major muscle group in the body. Rowing is a great low impact exercise and also promotes flexibility! The legs, back, core, and arms are utilized during every stroke, building muscular strength, as well as improving cardiovascular endurance. Each practice session is an opportunity to push one’s body to new limits and continue to reach fitness goals.
College Admissions & Scholarships
For high school rowers, applying to college is a rigorous and very competitive process. Rowing is a great extracurricular activity to make your college admissions application stand out from those of the other applicants. High school rowers have the opportunity to be recruited by universities and potentially earn scholarships for their education expenses.
Team Oriented
Rowing is the ultimate team sport! Rowing demands the complete focus and dedication of your teammates to move the boat uniformly down the race course. Every rower in the boat plays a crucial role in allowing the boat to reach its full potential. The athletes learn teamwork, communication, leadership, and responsibility while staying focused on the team’s goal. As a club, we provide a fun, supportive, encouraging, and competitive environment for youth and adults to learn the sport of rowing.
Personal Development
Rowing teaches the athletes how to set and achieve personal goals, establishing a sense of self-efficacy and drive among themselves. Over time, rowers develop a sense of responsibility, as well as refined feelings of teamwork and self trust.
Seasons
Rowing is a year-round sport and training is periodized for the different seasons and competition. The fall season is long distance racing and the rowers develop their aerobic fitness and endurance. During the spring season, the training program focuses on the athletes’ muscular power and anaerobic capacity for sprint racing.
